Kitchen Confidential -- Anthony Bourdain
Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain is undeniably a book about food and the underbelly of the restaurant industry. However, to me, the most striking aspect of the book was Bourdain’s ability to be unapologetically honest and blunt. The book’s humor and intrigue is in large part driven by his fearless honesty. He seems to hold nothing back. He does not care what readers will think. This approach to writing and storytelling is refreshing. Nowadays, it feels like one has to constantly watch their back and filter their words to avoid retaliation and being judged. Yet, it is exactly Bourdain’s lack of filter that makes his book so entertaining and hard to put down. It feels good to hear someone speak their mind. It may not please everyone. Some people may grow upset. As I like saying, agreement is not a requirement for discussion. I enjoy when people say what they are thinking, especially when I disagree. The most lively discussions are often ones of significant disagreement.
Thanks to Bourdain, I am thinking a lot about honesty this week. What should be shared and what should not be shared. When do we speak our minds and when do we hold back. Why do we hold back? Is writing different from speaking with others? Breaking barriers can be difficult, but it also connects us. It allows us to live the life of a stranger, of a colleague, or of a friend. Every time I pick up this book, I am instantly teleported to a kitchen. I can feel myself in Bourdain’s shoes. I can feel his pain. The sweat and pressure absorbing his body. His honesty breaks down the barriers between author and reader, and it leads to a much more profound experience for the reader–and I am sure for Bourdain as well. Thus, prioritize honesty. Be honest. It’s more exciting for everyone.
Share with others if you enjoy! Thanks for reading and see you next week!
